The Summer Reading Program is aimed at preventing academic backsliding and promoting literacy. It’s a great tool for parents looking to keep their kids on track and having fun this summer. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.”

Highlands County libraries are kicking off the SRP with sign-ups for the Reading Incentive

Children Read

Program. Children commit to reading for 1-2 hours weekly and receive prizes in return. Sign up for the program at your Lake Placid Memorial Library on June 2nd and 3rd and your child can “build a better you” with Ms. Deama. Register at your Sebring Public Library beginning June 6th. Visit your Avon Park Public Library beginning May 26th at noon through May 27th to register. Make cards for soldiers at APL as part of “Operation Gratitude.”

Your Lake Placid Library is hosting several events, starting with “Building Character with Ronald McDonald” on June 9th at 11 am. On June 16th at 1 pm, meet some of the brave police officers serving our community. There’ll be a snack and movie afterwards. On June 22nd at 11 am Katie Adams presents “Save the Rainforest,” a puppet show inspired by Lynne Cherry’s “The Great Kapok Tree.” Join Master Gardener David Austin for “The World of Pollinators” on July 19th at 2:30 pm. Enjoy a movie afterwards. On July 21st, the brave firefighters of the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Rescue invite you to tour their fire trucks and more. Call or check online for time. Show up dressed as a Harry Potter character on July 28th at 1 pm for Harry Potter’s 20th Anniversary. There will be cake, a movie, and prizes!

Your Sebring Library is kicking off with Katie Adams’ “Save the Rainforest” puppet show on June 22nd at 3:30 pm. On June 30th at 2 pm, Master Gardener David Austin presents “Grow a Better World.” On July 6th at 2 pm Legacy Bicycles and the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office will present a program on bicycle safety. Come build character with Ronald McDonald on July 13th at 2 pm. Stop by from 2-4 pm on July 20th for an afternoon of hands-on activities designed to help us “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Conserve.” Prizes will be awarded. There will be refreshments. On July 27th, 2:30 pm magician Phil Meyer presents “The Building Blocks of Reading.”

Your Avon Park Library begins its programming with Ronald McDonald on June 8th at 2 pm followed by Katie Adams’ “Save the Rainforest” on June 21st at 3:30 pm. “Reptile Discovery” visits on July 1st at 2 pm. Learn about these fascinating animals with expert handler Bruce Shwedick! On July 15th at 1 pm, celebrate “Pokéday” by catching Pokémon at the library, crafting, playing games, and watching a related movie! “Plant a Better World” with David Austin on July 20th at 2 pm. Make your own wand, search for magical creatures, and watch a related movie as part of Harry Potter’s Birthday on July 29th at 1 pm.
