Highlands County Loves These Audiobooks

Here is what Highlands County library patrons have enjoyed listening to at home, in the car, and elsewhere this year.

“The Rooster Bar” by John Grisham “takes you inside a law firm that’s on shaky ground. Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.”

In Tracy Chevalier‘s “The Last Runaway,” “Nineteenth-century America is practical, precarious, unsentimental, and scarred by the continuing injustice of slavery. In her new home, Honor discovers that principles count for little, even within a religious community meant to be committed to human equality. However, drawn into the clandestine activities of the Underground Railroad, Honor befriends two surprising women who embody the remarkable power of defiance. Eventually she must decide if she too can act on what she believes in, whatever the personal costs.”

Danielle Steel’s “The Right Time” “is an intimate, richly rewarding novel about pursuing one’s passion and succeeding beyond one’s wildest dreams. Abandoned by her mother at age seven, Alexandra Winslow takes solace in the mysteries she reads with her devoted father—and soon she is writing them herself, slowly graduating to dark, complex crime stories that reflect skill, imagination, and talent far beyond her years. After her father’s untimely death, at fourteen Alex is taken in by the nuns of a local convent, where she finds twenty-six mothers to take the place of the one she lost, and the time and encouragement to pursue her gift.”

“The Store” by James Patterson “doesn’t just want your money – it wants your soul. Imagine a future of unparalleled convenience. A powerful retailer, The Store, can deliver anything to your door, anticipating the needs and desires you didn’t even know you had. Most people are fine with that, but not Jacob and Megan Brandeis. New York writers whose livelihood is on the brink of extinction, Jacob and Megan are going undercover to dig up The Store’s secrets in a book that could change the entire American way of life.”

In “Against All Odds” by Danielle Steel “Kate—loving, supportive, and outspoken—can’t keep her children from playing against the odds. Can the odds be beaten? Not often—as her children have to learn for themselves. For Kate, the hardest lesson will be that she can’t protect the children she loves from the choices they make—but can only love them as they make them.”

Other popular titles include “Murder Games” by James Patterson, “Camino Island” by John Grisham, “The Identicals” by Elin Hilderbrand, “The Rising” by Ryan D’Agostino, and “The Witness” by Nora Roberts.
